Anthony Persaud : Salsa in the newspaper! (Iowa State Daily)

Anthony Persaud - Salsa Instructor

With high-energy hip shaking and leg strutting, Latin dance may not be for the faint of heart. The Descarga Latin Dance Club, however, finds even those with two left feet can feel the rhythm and add a touch of Latin flare to their step.

Anthony Persaud, graduate student in electrical and computer engineering and president of Descarga, is one of the club's instructors and is dedicated to teaching salsa.

"We really love teaching people how to salsa, that's really our main passion," Persaud said. "To see them perform the moves that look much better than when they first started and to see the admiration on their faces, you say, 'Oh my god, we taught them something they can use for the rest of their life.'"

According to the organization's Web site, Descarga "seeks to diligently promote the awareness, knowledge, appreciation and practice of salsa" at Iowa State. For the past four years, the club has been teaching ISU students and the Ames community Latin dancing styles such as salsa, merengue and the cha-cha.

"When we were [first arriving at Iowa State], there wasn't a club where you could take lessons, so we said we'll make our own," Persaud said.

"Anybody who was interested [in] any Latin dances, they could come learn from us."

Todd Steffen, senior in computer engineering, agreed.

"I had no background at all – I learned everything from here," said Steffen, club treasurer. "I actually didn't know how to dance at all until I came here."

Descarga members said occasional mishaps, such as stepping on someone's foot or getting poked in the eye, are to be expected.

"I was dancing with at a club, and [as] I was turning [my partner], she lifted her elbow and hit me in the eye," Persaud said.

Descarga's Web site,www.addicted2salsa.com, allows the club to post the time and locations of lessons and special events.

Thank you for all who enjoyed the party and came to support the event to make a re-occurring one. I would like to thank everyone who came earlier to take my lessons (and hope you enjoyed them). If you have any comments or suggestions to make the event better — you can always use the forums.
If you missed the lessons at Crush, DJ Julian was kind enough to take a small video of the start of class.

Well, say this three times fast! "Double-handed, hand holds".  So it might be easy.. but sometimes we get stuck in weird hand positions. Here is another episode of addicted 2 salsa podcast! Today we go over a couple of slick ways of getting out of two-handed holds in combos.

You Getting Out of two-handed hand holdsknow, sometimes you end-up with holding the follower's both hands (crossed position) and maybe don't know how to be slick about getting back to normal for the next move? Well, we summarize a couple of ways of doing it, so you can just pick one whenever you end up in that position! They can be used as regular salsa combos, or combo finishers (think of interesting ways of putting them in)

AddictedtoSalsa Makes the News

Video Podcasting News, a site that features news and information about video podcasts and independent video productions, has highlighted AddictedtoSalsa for its its use of downloadable videos to teach dancing.

"The formula is simple," the site notes. "With each episode, two beautiful salsa dancers demonstrate a new dance step, and then show how it can be incorporated into a dance."

"The dancer’s addiction is infectious," the article continues,  "the music is hot and the directions are clear enough that we may just have to try the Double-Hand turn and the Tai-Flip."

No more email messages from us…. for a while…

Well, its March 1st (the first of the month), and just like everyone that has to pay rent on an apartment — here at addicted2salsa.com, we have to pay our bills too.

After much thought from our accounting department (ok, we really don’t have an accounting department), we will shutdown our email mailing list system that we pay FeedBlitz to manage. Our website visitors are growing very rapidly (we have over 2,500 unique visitors last month and over 1500+ podcast subscribers). So even if our bandwidth costs are rising… this is very exciting. To make way for new stuff, we are going to hopefully save on this bill in order to improve our podcasts and general website: our video computer broke, so we are going to buy a new cheap one. — just need to save enough money — remember, we do this for free! ;-)

For now, I please ask for everyone to check the website more frequently to keep up with the stories, announcements and events. We will try to get a cheaper new email list system. Most likely we us ’salsa geeky programmers’ will home brew it.. but until then, check the website!

Thanks and keep watching….
